Biography

Birth

Sara Maria de Nijs was born on the 14th of March, 1899[1]. She was the oldest child of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs and Odilia Fritz. The translated certificate reads: On this day, the sixteenth day of March, eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, we, the undersigned Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of the city of Utrecht, appeared in the House of the Municipality: Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, railroad employee, twenty-seven years of age, residing at home, Vleutenscheweg (now Vleutenseweg) 52, who declared to us, that on the fourteenth of this month at half past five in the afternoon his lawful wife, Odilia Fritz, without profession, gave birth at his residence to a child of the female gender, to which the first names Sara Maria shall be given. This declaration was made in the presence of Dirk Brans, forty-two years old, and Gerrit Pest, thirty-four years old, railroad officials, both residing here, of which we have taken up this deed and read it to the person named and the witnesses, who have signed it.

First marriage

She married Hermanus van Denderen on the 22nd of February, 1922[2].

The translation of the marriage certificate reads: On this day the twentieth day of February, the undersigned Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of Utrecht, appeared in the House of the Municipality to enter into marriage:

Hermanus van Denderen, bleeker (bleacher?), born and living at Zeist, twenty-four years old, adult son of Rijk van Denderen, workman, and of Hermina de Bruin, without profession, sixty-four years old, living at Zeist

-and-

Sara Maria de Nijs, without occupation, born and residing at Zeist, twenty-two years old, adult daughter of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, cleaner, fifty years old, residing at Zeist and of Odilia Fritz, deceased.

The father of the bridegroom is sixty-six years old.

Announcement has taken place here without interruption the eleventh of this month.

They have submitted to us: proof of the announcement made at Zeist, their birth certificates and extracts from the mother of the bride and a certificate of consent from the father of the bride.

The parents of the bridegrooms, present here, declared to give their consent to this marriage.

We asked the prospective spouses if they would accept each other as spouses and faithfully fulfill all the duties imposed by law on the state of marriage. After they had answered these questions in the affirmative, we declared in the name of the law that they are bound to each other by marriage.

Witnesses were present:

Anthonie van Leeuwen, janitor, forty-eight years old, and Albertus Feenstra, messenger, thirty-seven years old, both living here.

The mother of the bridegroom declared not to be able to write.

Second marriage

After Hermanus' death in 1923[3], she remarried Hendrikus Johannes Fransen on the 19th of February, 1924[4].

When translated, the certificate reads:

On this day the nineteenth of November, nineteen hundred and twenty-four, we, the undersigned, Registrar of the Civil Registry of Utrecht, appeared in the house of the municipality, in order to contract a marriage:

Hendrikus Johannes Fransen, without profession, born in Gorinchem, living here, aged thirty four years; son of more than one year of Petrus Johannes Fransen, deceased, and of Goverdina Rietjee, without profession, living here

-and-

Sara Maria de Nijs, without occupation, born and residing at home, twenty-five years old; widow of Hermanus van Denderen; daughter of more than one year of Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, cleaner, fifty-four years old, residing at home and of Odilia Fritz, deceased.

Annunciation took place here without interruption on the eighth of this month.

They have submitted to us: their birth certificates, and death certificates of the mother of the bride and the husband of the bride. The father of the bride, present here, declared to give his consent to this marriage.

We asked the future spouses if they would accept each other as spouses and faithfully fulfill all the duties which the law imposes on the state of marriage. After these questions had been answered in the affirmative, we pronounced in the name of the law that they were bound to each other.

Witnesses present were Anthonie van Leeuwen, janitor, fifty-one years old and Albertus Feenstra, messenger, thirty-nine years old, both living here.
